New York Fashion Week: Day 5

Building Blocks: Rodarte

There's a sense of rebirth in Rodarte's latest collection, as if the models just emerged from the earth and walked straight out covered in glorified stones and concrete. In fact, one of the looks featuring bright orange hair on the models very much reminds me of Milla Jovovich's Leeloo character in The Fifth Element. The Mulleavy sisters, brainchildren behind the brand, are experts in blending textural fabrics with intricate construction techniques. Last fall, it was ripped knits and cobweb dresses; this season it's all about gravel texture paired with Nicholas Kirkwood's "straitjacket" thigh-high bondage boots, as coined by the designers.

Gimme More of that: Derek Lam

Two-toned structured coat: love. Giant fur jacket; love. Leather cigarette pants: love. Oversized lapel boyfriend blazer: love. Sparkly draped tops: love. Sweet cocktail dresses with exposed back zipper: love, love, love!
Ok, I think that's enough said...

Welcome to the Dark Side: Max Azria

Max Azria moved away from his usual sweet, frilly dresses to a darker, goth goddess-like collection. A lot of Victorian style lace can be found, and is used in various ways, with the brilliant lace turtleneck being one of them. Shapes are generally stronger and bolder compared to past seasons, but the draping remains feminine. This collection will surely be able to cater to women of all sorts.
